For the Environment | Nichirei's Philosophy of Environmental Preservation

The Nichirei Group has established an environmental policy and long-term goals that drive its group-wide environmental activities.

The Nichirei Group's Environmental Policy

In order to reduce negative impact on the environment, the Nichirei Group adopted an environmental policy in 1992.

Environmental Policy Strive to reduce negative impact on the environment 1. Strengthen environmental protection measures by constructing an environmental management system 2. Observe all legal requirements prescribed by environmental laws, regulations, etc.

The Nichirei Group's Goals

Based on its Environmental Policy, the Nichirei Group has established long-term goals to be achieved by the fiscal year ending March 2011. In order to achieve these goals, our various operating companies have undertaken various activities aimed at preserving the environment.

Long-Term Goals

  1. Waste reduction and reuse of resources
    Reduce generation, reuse and recycle of waste destined for volume of waste for final disposal to zero. *1
  2. Prevention of global warming
    Work to reduce the amount of CO2 generated through our business activities through such measures as reducing energy consumption at our food processing plants and distribution centers and reducing fuel consumption during transport. *2
  3. Provision of eco-friendly products and services
    Provide products and services that can help reduce burden on the environment, in accordance with the special characteristics of each operating company
  4. Appropriate handling of chemical substances that greatly affect the environment
    Minimize environmental impact through appropriate handling and rapid disposal when necessary.
  5. Environmental preservation activities for head office and branch office clerical functions
    Initiate such activities as energy conservation in offices, sorting of trash, and purchase of eco-friendly products.
  6. Construction of environmental management system
    Construct and continually improve mechanisms for reducing negative environmental impact in accordance with the characteristics of each operating company.
  7. Observance of environmental laws
    Continually monitor status of compliance and quickly respond to changes in environment-related legal requirements.
  • *1 "Volume of waste for final disposal" refers to the volume of waste that is transported outside of a workplace and is either buried directly in a landfill or incinerated without making use of the resulting energy.
  • *2 We have established numerical targets for domestic food processing plants operated by Nichirei Foods and Nichirei Fresh. Our goal is to reduce generation of CO2 (from electric power or burning of fuel) per ton of production by 15% from 1999 levels.
