The Nichirei Group set up an environmental management system in order to achieve its environmental goals by the fiscal year ending March 2011.
The Nichirei Group consists of various types of operating companies, and each one affects the environment in different ways. Establishing a separate Environmental Protection Committee for each operating company allows us to devise environmental measures and engage in environmental preservation activities that are appropriate for each company.
Each company's efforts are reported to the entire group at thrice-yearly meetings of the Group Environmental Protection Committee, which determines group-wide environmental measures and policies based on the progress and conditions reported by each company.
Nichirei Corporation's Corporate Internal Audit Division conducts audits of group-wide compliance with environmental laws and other important aspects of environmental protection. Workplaces that have received ISO 14001 certification receive additional internal environmental auditing plus annual inspection by an outside certification body.
In order to get a quantitative picture of the costs and environmental benefits of our environmental protection activities, the Nichirei Group introduced an environmental accounting system in the year ended March 2001. The system allows us to assess the cost of environmental protection measures taken at our food processing plants and logistics centers, and to assess the economic effects of implementing environmental measures at our ISO 14001-certified workplaces.
